When asked, “Do you want to live a pain free life?” The obvious answer is, “yes, of course I do.” When asked, “What steps are you willing to take to live a pain free life, and more importantly, are you willing to start today?” What is your answer? Do you know where to begin?
Living with pain can truly confuse our sense of self, challenge our motivation, and shake our confidence.
It is very easy for us to defer our healing for another more suitable time. We become master storytellers, creating an internal dialogue that goes something like, “time will heal… oh it’s not that bad… I don’t have time or money to deal with this.” That dialogue, over time, convinces us that the pain is tolerable and drains our energy, which often creates a chronic pain pattern.
It is important to know what you are dealing with so you know how to heal it. Take a mental picture of your body: do you have a chronic ache or sharp pain that has gone untreated for a period of time? Now, take a minute to put together a short action plan – most importantly, identify where you want to begin and which steps will be most beneficial at this stage of your healing process. It can be as simple as prioritizing exercise and movement throughout your day. You may also consider booking regular massages to help prevent further injury and to treat the current symptoms you are experiencing.
If you sense there is something more serious happening, consider seeing your primary care physician or a specialist. There are many available options out there. The most important thing is to take the first step in finding out what going on with your body and believe it can be changed – and then follow through on the treatment plan.
Remember, the first step is knowing.
